In the 5th edition of the " Journalism for Development” competition, Bulgarian Platform for International Development (BPID) and Center for Sustainable Communities Development (CSCD) awarded 5 prizes to authors who distinguished themselves with their articles on the topics of sustainable development, marginalized groups, migrants, refugees and official development assistance on a ceremony held at the Launchee Event Center in Sofia.
This year's awards are provided by "Stone and Compass".
Angel Petrov from "Dnevnik" received the first place with his article "The situation of Syrians in Turkey", where the state and society show them more and more clearly that they are no longer welcome.
Laura Turkoleva from BNR took second prize for her article on the integration of Ukrainian refugees "Andrei Palval, who tells human stories through images of birds".
Kristian Yulzari and Eleonora Tropankova presented a joint multimedia project "The Undocumented" about social problems in the context of human rights, which won them third place.
Two special awards were presented to Delyan Todorov for his articles from Senegal/Ghana published in the website “Palatka” and Kaloyan Konstantinov for his reporting on the war in Ukraine. They will travel to Uganda where they will have the opportunity to visit the medical center of Stone and Compass, a global organization that implements projects and initiatives in developing countries and transition economies on 4 continents and will have the chance to investigate a topic of their choice with the support of the organization.
Before the awards ceremony, the Italian journalist Stefania Prandi presented "We are workers, not slaves!" – a story about female workers from Bulgaria and Romania who face injustices, labor violations and sexual harassment in the fields and greenhouses of Spain and Italy.
Her lecture was combined with the discussion on challenges that Bulgarian mobile workers face in Italy, led by Silvia Milcheva, representative of the Federation of Independent Agricultural Trade Unions.
Stanimira Hadjimitova, director of Center for Sustainable Communities Development, made the world presentation of the annual report "Minority and Indigenous Trends 2022 - Focus on work”, prepared by the international human rights organization Minority Rights Group International (MRGI).
While Prof. Petranka Fileva, Chairman of the Board of the Bulgarian Platform for International Development (BPID), spoke about the Bulgarian page in the AidWatch Report 2022 of CONCORD Europe.
The Journalism for Development reporter award was first announced in 2018 and is an expression of the desire of BPID and CSCD to highlight excellence in the coverage of issues of development, inequality, human rights and poverty eradication.
